Documenting my sewing adventures, and the ins and outs of learning to adjust patterns for a perfect fit.

Floral for Fall McCall's 6844

Happy Sunday

I am really excited about sewing for Fall. I stopped in Joann's yesterday, I had the 25% all purchases coupon. Initially I walked through the store, didn't really see much. I'm thinking about the sewing pattern review sewing bee contest so I was browsing for fabric for that.  I grabbed some more storage containers, went by patterns and decided to hold off on getting the vogue patterns.

There was a cart full of fall fabric to be set out, and I came across this beautiful blue floral scuba. I took it to the counter to see the price, regularly 19.99 on sale for 11.99. So I thought nope, put it back. Checked out and went home. A couple hours passed and I thought I really wanted that fabric. And the light bulb went off, I have a 25% off all purchases. So I jumped back into my car and went back to grab it.

Now here comes my melt down...... I searched high and low for the fabric I could not find it. So then I started to look up on top of the shelves where they stock over flow, and let me tell you Joann's have some beautiful fabric up there. WHY is it up there, and not on the actual shelf???? Who knows.

After going through all the aisle, and shelves etc I finally asked for assistance. The counting counter lady, seemed convinced I was mistaken. She kept saying this is all that we have. So I asked is it in the back. She shrugged that off. Now I'm getting upset because I really wanted this fabric, and then I remembered I had taken a photo earlier, so I showed the lady. And it has the time stamp with the location, I said I was here at 11:30am. Lady goes in the back and retrieves my fabric. And all is well in the world.

Wearing Floral can be tricky, I knew because of the print and the size of the flowers I would not do a dress, personal preference do to my shape, or maybe a very short dress lol.  But I wanted either, a pencil skirt or a jacket, I decided on the jacket. Now even though I wouldn't wear this as a dress, I would  wear a pencil skirt with a jacket, etc. Anyways I came home and grabbed McCall's 6844, and the rest is history. I made view D and I love it. Absolutely love it.
Picked up some fabric to make a blouse to go with it. So stay tune.

I always seem to make an easy project hard, I spent most of my time cutting this fabric. It's a fast sew. But I wanted to have the flowers fall as flattering as possible. So I looked to mirror the sleeves, to make them look uniform. Made sure I cut the front and back similar line. And the peplum made sure I spaced that nicely.

What I forgot to do... is to flip my sleeve piece because I cut those one by one. And even though the notches did not match up, I sewed the sleeve up anyways.

When I thought I had the perfect sleeves

And realized my error staring at the jacket for a while. So I had to undo it, take it and luckily I was able to recut it correctly. Its not 100% perfect but its much better.

So note to myself and you too. If you're cutting pieces out 1 layer, remember to FLIP the pattern for the second piece.

This pattern is still in print, it was very popular in 2013-2014. However I think its still a great pattern So grab it if you like.

    1. Thank you
I'm not sure why it was in the back and joanns is becoming very lazy with the fabric and organizing it. It's like they purposely don't want you to get the good stuff

  3. Same! How on earth did it get moved from the floor to the back?! It makes you wonder...

  4. I always take pictures of fabric at JoAnns, now I know why that's such a good idea! Great jacket! I'm hoping to make this but can't remember where I put the pattern. Also, I'm notorious for doing silly things like cutting the same piece the wrong way too haha
